Custom Software for AutomatedTest

‍LabVIEW Tips

Last newsletter I had the wrong link for adding custom icons to buttons.  Here is the correct link.

Creating Custom Icons

Using icons on buttons is a great way to make user interfaces more intuitive.  This is a great article on how to do that.   I use system buttons and import the image as a decal.  You can find free to use icons on NI's website and the internet.  I use iconfinder.com

Source Code Control

Using source code control is a great way to have multiple developers work on the same project.  It also allows you to go back to a previous version.  You can even create branches to have code with different feature sets.

I use TortoiseSVN.  It is free and easy to use.  I know a lot of developers are choosing Git.   I still use TortoiseSVN because I have a lot of experience with it, does what I need, and is easier to use.  The main difference between Git and SVN is Git has a distributed architecture while SVN is centralized.

Using TortoiseSVN ,I have a repository for each project on my machine.  I can commit changes to the repository if I am at a customer site with bad internet.  I am a single developer and I don't need the tools to manage multiple developers.  Both are great tools and I highly encourage using a source code control tool that works for you.

‍Article about Electric Vehicle Transition

‍IEEE Spectrum is the magazine you get when you join IEEE.  There was an article that IEEE has put out about the transition to electric vehicles.

Below is the summery.

THE EV TRANSITION IS HARDER THAN ANYONE THINKS

Two years ago, I began investigating the veracity of claims surrounding the transition to EVs at scale. The result is a 12-part series and e-book, The EV Transition Explained, that explores the tightly woven technological, policy, and social issues involved. The articles are based on scores of interviews I conducted with managers and engineers in the auto and energy industries, as well as policy experts, academic researchers, market analysts, historians, and EV owners. I also reviewed hundreds of reports, case studies, and books surrounding EVs and electrical grids.

Automotive Test Expo

Automotive Testing Expo will be back to a full-capacity, full-size show on October 24, 25 & 26, 2023 at the Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi, Michigan.

Automotive Testing Expo is the world’s leading international expo for every aspect of automotive testing, development and validation technologies, taking place every year in Detroit. In America, as elsewhere, it is the leading event for the technologies and services in ADAS and autonomous vehicle testing, electric and hybrid powertrain testing, battery and range testing, EMI and NVH test and analysis and the full spectrum of test and validation technologies for full-vehicle, component and systems development.

Let me know if you want to meet up at the expo.

National Air and Space Museum

Our family took a vacation to Washington DC this summer.  We got the opportunity to visit the air and space museum.  I highly recommend paying a visit.  It has the Apollo 11 Command module, the Spirt of St. Louis, and the Wright Flyer.

As I was wandering through the exhibit hall, I saw the model pictured above.  As someone who develops automated tests for a living, I found this artifact very interesting.

This Apollo command module pressure model was part of a larger grouping built and used for wind tunnel testing conducted in the development stage of the Apollo program. The testing was to observe and measure the aerodynamic and heat transfer properties of the module at launch and reentry. This model was to document the distribution of pressure the command module would experience traversing the atmosphere at a specific angle.
